Tips for Holiday eating - from Erin Armitage, (Registered Dietitian)
Enjoy your family and friends
• Maintain perspective – the holidays are about giving and sharing!
• Enjoy the atmosphere, eat slowly, and savour everything you eat and drink.
Don’t go hungry
• Eat regular meals and snacks.
• Avoid skipping meals or snacks in hopes of “saving up” your calories.
• Eat a light snack before a holiday party or meal to avoid overeating.
Eat only what tastes REALLY good
• Rather than trying everything that is on offer, pick out 2 or 3 items that are especially appealing to you!
• Eat only when you are hungry, not just because the food is there.
Don’t plan on a New Years diet
• The expectation of a diet is enough to cause us to overeat!
• Instead, plan to maintain your weight through the holiday season – that means avoiding overeating AND under-eating.
Be physically active
• Set realistic goals during the holidays.
• Be active outside of your usual gym routine – go for a walk with your family, build a snow man, or park your car at the far end of the parking lot when you go shopping.
